Sleep and Erectile Dysfunction
About Erectile Dysfunction
It is estimated that one in ten men will have recurring erectile dysfunction at some point in their life Only 10% of sufferers receive treatment The causes can be physical (e.g. due to disease) or psychological (e.g. due to work stress), but treatment is available for both
Erectile dysfunction is an inability to get or keep an erection . As sexual activity is an important part of life, erectile dysfunction has a profound effect on sufferers. Occasional inability to maintain an erection can be caused by too much alcohol, stress, or a number of other factors. However, a frequent inability indicates a problem that for most people is treatable.
The psychological causes can usually be treated by discovering the source of the problem (for example stress at home or depression) and helping to solve the problem through counseling or lifestyle changes. Physical causes can include:
Diabetes High blood pressure Heavy smoking High cholesterol or other heart problems The effect of some medications
Treatment typically takes the form of pills, though injections, surgery and other devices are also used. It is important to discuss erectile dysfunction with your doctor and not seek a solution with non-approved pills or creams advertised on the internet or television. About Sleep and Erectile Dysfunction
Like many other functions during sleep, men frequently get erections while sleeping There is evidence that sleep disorders are linked to erectile dysfunction
Throughout the day, and especially during sleep, there are cycles of hormones and other physiological chemicals. One of these is testosterone , which is an important hormone for many aspects of sexual health. People with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a common sleep disorder, have an interrupted testosterone cycle. It is possible that such disrupted hormonal cycles may be the link between OSA and the ability to maintain an erection .
The most successful way to treat OSA is with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine used while sleeping. Scientific studies have shown that the use of a CPAP in men with erectile dysfunction and OSA improves their ability to maintain an erection and their sex life. The CPAP is about as successful as the traditional oral pills.
When you discuss erectile dysfunction with your doctor, be sure to mention any sleep problems you may also be having.

Tips to Increase Testosterone Naturally
Testosterone is the most important hormone in men. It not only controls sexual function and libido but is also responsible for giving you your definitive male characteristics.
Testosterone production peaks during puberty bit begins declining after the age of 30. This can lead to a whole lot of changes in your body.
Here are a few simple and easy tips to increase testosterone naturally:
1. Compound Exercises- While lack of physical activity can be one of the reasons behind plummeting testosterone levels, intense physical training is known to enhance testosterone production.
Compound exercises that work a group of muscles are best known to boost testosterone production. Some of such exercises include squats, bench press, chin ups, dead lifts etc.,
Though exercises is good for testosterone production what you need to keep in mind is that you should limit your workout to 45-60 minutes in a single session. This is because if you workout for more than an hour, your body starts producing cortisol which inhibits and diminishes testosterone production.
2. Diet- Your diet is extremely important in determining your overall health. It should be rich in proteins, moderate in fats and limited in carbohydrates for optimum testosterone production.
Most men tend to avoid fats but you need to be aware of the fact that you must include Essential Fatty Acids of EFA's in your diet. This is because all anabolic steroid hormones are produced in cholesterol and if your diet is deficient in EFA's you are most likely to have low levels of testosterone.
3. Avoid Too Much Soy- You must avoid eating foods that contain soy protein. This is because soy increases estrogen level which affects testosterone production negatively.
4. Avoid Alcohol- You must also avoid drinking too much alcohol. This is because alcohol not only affects testosterone production but can also lead to erectile problems.
5. Reduce Stress- Stress is a major deterrent to testosterone production. Among the psychological causes of low testosterone it is the most prominent one. Stress increases the level of hormone Cortisol in blood which affects testosterone production adversely. You should try to relax in order to reduce stress. Exercise is another great stress reliever.
6. Sleep for 8 hours- Not getting enough sleep also increases stress. Sleep is the most natural way to lower stress and lack of sleep not only affects testosterone levels but also lowers HGH secretion. People who are sleep deprived often look tired and older than their years and this is largely because it affects their HGH levels.
Over and above, there are some natural supplements that can help boost your testosterone levels. These natural supplements are packed with potent herbs and other natural ingredients that boost testosterone levels without any side effects.

smoking and sexual health
Impotence or erectile dysfunction (ED ) is the inability to attain or maintain an adequate erection for sexual satisfaction. It affects up to 30 million American men. An erection depends on an intact nervous system and adequate blood flow to the penis . When a man is sexually stimulated, the brain sends signals to the arteries in the penis causing them to dilate and fill up with blood. Special sponge-like erectile structures that run the length of the penile shaft, two corpus cavernosa and the corpus spongiosum, become engorged with blood causing the penis to become firm. The swollen erectile tissue compresses the veins, preventing the blood from draining and thus the erection is maintained. The penile arteries are very small, about 1/3 the size of the coronary arteries so they are very vulnerable to damage. Damaged blood vessels do not allow adequate blood flow, and low flow equals a weak or non-existent erection . The four most common causes of erectile dysfunction are smoking , high cholesterol , diabetes , and high blood pressure. All of these heath problems damage blood vessels. Of the four, only smoking is a otherwise healthy young man’s problem. Smoking doubles the risk of moderate to severe erectile dysfunction . A man who starts smoking at the age of 18 and continues for 20 years may have his sex life seriously derailed by the age of 38. Smoking is the most common cause of ED for men under 40. The more cigarettes smoked, the greater the risk. As men age other conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, may develop further compounding the problem. This kind of damage is very hard to reverse - only 25% of men will see improvement in their erectile dysfunction if they quit smoking . Other options include drugs like Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis; however, these therapies are most effective when combined with smoking cessation. The good news - smoking rates in California are on the decline and are the second lowest in the United States. The bad news is 17% of Californian men and 9% of women still smoke . In Canada, graphic pictures of smoking related diseases, including erectile dysfunction , appear on cigarette packages; in studies more than 70% of adults and 90% of teenagers found these warnings effective and 44% of smokers said these images increased their motivation to quit. Why don't we have these warnings on cigarette packages in the United States? Maybe the $100,000 a day Big Tobacco spends on Washington lobbyists has something to do with it. May 31 is World No Tobacco Day. Pass it on.

Erectile Dysfunction Complication of Low Testosterone
Familiar complaints of many aging men are changes within their sexual relationships. There are definite parallels between erectile dysfunction and testosterone levels. Not being able to perform at all sexually or not being able to have the stamina of times before is one of the more common complications of low testosterone . Many men lose the desire they once had to engage in sexual activity and see a swift decline in their ability to connect sexually with their partners.
Closely related to sexual and erectile dysfunction is self image. Depression caused by low testosterone levels can contribute to weight gain thereby diminishing self image. Testosterone helps regulate fat distribution so when there are drops in amounts of testosterone fat is likely to begin collecting in certain areas. In many men this happens to occur in the abdomen area.
Muscle weakness develops and just an overall lack of energy settles in. Unwanted extra weight and the lack of energy to exercise to get rid of it pose a problem to many men with this condition. These things coupled with depression are the reason many men feel they have hit the dreaded midlife crisis.
Studies have shown that decreased levels of testosterone can attribute to the development of insulin resistance and that men who have diabetes have lower amounts of free and total testosterone than men without diabetes . New research has also shown that diabetic men with extremely low testosterone levels are more prone to develop atherosclerosis (artery hardening), which can lead to heart attacks.
With such serious complications of low testosterone it is a scary thought that approximately 13 million men in the U.S. have this problem but only a mere 10% receive treatment for it. That means that a friend, spouse, father, or uncle you know probably suffers with this silent nemesis and has no idea that they are symptomatic. If you are a man that feels that you are experiencing complications of low testosterone it is to your benefit to seek medical advice.

Causes of low testosterone
• Obesity : Recent studies have shown that obese men are more likely to have low testosterone than non-obese men.
• Testicle injury: Trauma or injury to testicle may result in low testosterone level. Testicles produce testosterone. Injury to tissues of testicles can impair production of testosterone .
• Diseases: Infectious diseases like mumps infection during puberty can affect testicles causing inflammation. Other infectious diseases like tuberculosis (TB) , HIV may also affect production of testosterone . Certain inflammatory diseases like like arthritis and autoimmune diseases can cause low testosterone .
• Increased iron in blood (hemochromatosis): Increased iron in blood may damage testes and pituitary gland.
• Aging: For most men, the level of testosterone start declining after the age of 30. It continue to decrease about 1% each year. By age 70, testosterone levels can decline by about 28%.
• Chemo and Radiation therapy: Chemicals and Rays used in these therapies can damage testicular cells and diminish testosterone production. Sometimes these cells recover to function normally. Sometimes the damage may be permanent.
• Performance boosting drugs: Performance boosting drugs like anabolic steroids, beta-2 agonists, selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs), and various human hormones, etc can lower testosterone level.
• Smoking : Cigarette smoking considerably alters concentrations of the sex hormone testosterone, in men. Male cigarette smokers have low testosterone levels than male nonsmokers. This leads to lower sex drive and lower sperm counts than those with normal or high concentrations of testosterone hormone
• Alcohol: Studies have shown that alcohol lowers testosterone levels about 40%. Chronic alcohol abuse leads to lowered sperm counts , sperm motility and free testosterone.
• Marijuana: Marijuana smoking leads to low testosterone level, erectile dysfunction and male infertility .
